We have installed hundreds of boilers in the area over the years.
Boiler installation or replacement?
Boiler replacement is where we remove an existing boiler and upgrade it with a new one.
Boiler installation is where a boiler and central heating system’s fitted into a new build property or extension.
Or
When the existing central heating system is stripped out and replaced with a brand new boiler and system.
Replacement
Boiler replacements are more common than installations. Boilers tend to last only half the time as the rest of the central heating system, pipes, radiators, cylinder, etc.
A serviced boiler will last around 10-15 years, while the other components of a central heating system can last up to 30 years.
The boiler is the most important component of the central heating system and’s usually the first part that needs replacing. In this instance, we’ll remove your old current then put a modern boiler in its place.
A new boiler will usually work correctly with the components of the existing central system. When we replace your boiler, you may need/want to upgrade parts of the existing central heating system.
For example
You may need a more powerful pump or want thermostatic valves fitted to existing radiators.
Whatever your boiler replacement requirements, our qualified engineers will replace your boiler and upgrade your existing central heating system in no time.
Installation
When building a new property, you’ll certainly need a new boiler and central heating system installed. With a new build, it’s easy to design the perfect system you’re not constrained by an existing central heating system.
If you’re an owner of an older property, you may want the old boiler and system completely stripped out and replaced.
If you have had an extension built, there will likely be changes needed to the existing central heating system. A larger boiler likely required to power the extra radiators, new bathrooms, and hot taps.
When Should You Upgrade Your Boiler?
Ideally, boilers should be upgraded every ten years. After a decade, they start to lose their efficiency.
If you have your boiler serviced annually, you can expect it to last longer, but it’ll still get less efficient as it ages.
New Boilers vs Old Boilers For Energy Efficiency
Poor boiler energy efficiency is bad news for the homeowner as the boiler accounts for up to 60% of the total household energy spend.
The best modern condensing boilers offer up to 99% efficiency.
Old boilers run as low as 55% efficiency. That’s 45% wastage if you live in a typical semi-detached home.
If your boilers running at 55% efficiency, you’re wasting up to £340 a year.
Modern condensing boilers collect excess gas, which is then recycled to heat water.
New condensing boilers will run at least 90% energy efficient. Spend a bit more money for a 99% energy efficient boiler.
Other New Boiler Benefits
Feel The Difference Instantly
Once the new boiler’s been installed and the central heating system’s been set and balanced, you’ll notice that your home feels warmer and cosier.
Environmentally & Pocket-Friendly
You’ll have a pleasant surprise when you get your gas bill. Your new efficient boiler is cheaper to run and lowers your carbon footprint, making your home more environmentally friendly.
Freedom From Breakdown
Old boilers are prone to breakdown in the middle of winter when they’re forced to work hard.
When a boiler breaks down, you’re left with a cold home while you wait for an engineer who then has to source the parts to fix your boiler.
Sometimes parts can be sourced easily and boilers repaired swiftly (this usually depends on how old your boiler is). Some parts are challenging to obtain. Some parts are discontinued, therefore unobtainable. Then there is no option but to replace your boiler.
After installation, you can relax in the knowledge that new boilers don’t break down.
The Boiler Installation Survey
There are many different types, makes and sizes of boiler.
The best boiler for your property will depend on a few factors, such as
- The size of your home
- Number of Bathrooms
- Number of radiators
- Hot water usage
- Available space
- Existing boiler location,
- Existing heating system
- Available fuel at your property
TM Hughes offers a free survey for boiler installations.
An engineer can visit your home at any time to discuss your boiler and central heating needs to determine the best boiler for your home and your budget.
Unlike other companies, you’ll be sent a gas safe registered engineer highly experienced in boiler installations, not a high-pressure salesman (who’s never fitted a boiler)
After the survey, you’ll be given a free no-obligation quote
What Goes Into A Boiler Installation Survey?
One of our engineers will thoroughly inspect your current heating system (if you have one), then go through a range of boiler and central heating options suitable for your home.
These include
Types Of Boiler
The type of boiler you need depends on the size of your home, available space, hot water, and heating requirements. There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to installing a new boiler, but there is a perfect boiler for your home and budget, which we’ll determine during the survey.
Combi Boilers
Combi boilers are often found in smaller homes, perfect for those who don’t require lots of hot water.
Water’s heated from the mains by a heating element any time you turn on the hot tap.
Combi boilers don’t require water tanks, water cylinders, or a central heating pump ( The pumps located inside the boiler)
Combi boilers are the quickest type of boiler to install and service.
Half of the boilers fitted each year in the UK are combi boilers.
System Boilers
System boilers work better for the typical 3-4 bedroom home, utilising a hot water cylinder for storage. There’s always enough water for multiple hot taps and Bathrooms.
System boilers can use unvented pressurised cylinders that don’t need a feed tank. They use less space and provide better pressure to your taps and shower.
Vented systems need a water tank and use gravity to deliver the water.
The central heating system will usually incorporate a central heating pump to circulate the hot water around the radiators.
Regular Boilers
Regular boilers are best for larger homes with multiple bedrooms and bathrooms (for example, five bedrooms and three bathrooms).
The regular boiler incorporates a hot water cylinder along with a feed and expansion tank in the loft. This setup requires the most space but enables lots of hot water at the same time from multiple taps.
Many older homes still have regular boilers. If you live in a small to medium-sized home with a regular boiler, we may recommend upgrading to a simpler system or even a combi boiler to free up space.
Fuel Type
You likely require a gas boiler, most boilers are gas. Homes off the gas grid will have an electric oil or LPG boiler.
Boiler Sizes
All boiler types are available in three different sizes 24-27kw, 28-32kw, and 35-42kw (KW is the measure of power).
The size of the boiler you need will depend on the size of your home, the number of bathrooms, the number of radiators, and your hot water usage.
- A small home with under ten radiators will need a 24 to 27 kW boiler
- Medium-sized homes with 10 to 15 radiators will need a 28 to 32 kW boiler
- Larger homes with more than 15 radiators will need a 35 to 40 kW boiler

Where To Fit Your New Boiler
Some homeowners want to have their boilers moved during a boiler replacement.
We often remove the old boiler and put a new one in its place; this option is the cheapest and least disruptive.
When it comes to new installs, we’ll place your new boiler somewhere discreet, usually behind the kitchen, a kitchen cabinet or inside a cupboard, somewhere where it won’t get in your way.
The Central Heating System
Apart from the boiler, your central heating system’s made up of lots of components including radiators, pump cylinders controls and sometimes water tanks. We have to take into consideration the existing system or what you want from a brand new system.
You might be happy with your current central heating system, how it works and only want your boiler replacing.
Alternatively, you may want to upgrade to the latest thermostatic radiator valves and smart central heating controls.
During the survey, an engineer will discuss all the possible options with you to build/upgrade your central heating system as you see fit.
