TM Hughes & Son Gas Services Ltd have been Power Flushing central heating systems for many years.

Powerflushing works wonders for central heating systems removing inevitable sludge build-ups, which hamper energy efficiency and heat output resulting in larger energy bills.

Over time rust and debris accumulate, creating the dreaded ‘sludge’ a mud-like substance that blocks your pipes, radiators and Boiler.

Powerflushing Removes The Sludge From Your System Resulting In

  • Better energy efficiency
  • Better heat output
  • Boiler protection
  • Smaller energy bills

Ideally, Powerflushing’s carried out every five years, service your Boiler every year as well, and your whole central heating system will run efficiently and will be less likely to fail (boiler breakdown).

A power flushed system runs smoothly. Neglected systems will suffer from sludge build-ups causing inefficient heat output, blockages and boiler breakdowns. Debris can become lodge in boiler elements blocking the flow of water or causing the part to break/fail then the Boiler stops working.

Extremely clogged systems stop radiators from emitting in real heat, you’ll get some from the top of the radiators, but that’s about it. With this scenario, your boilers working hard, burning lots of fuel for very little heat.

Powerflush your system, and you won’t experience these problems. Your Boiler and central heating system will run smoothly free from corrosion and debris, while significantly reducing the chances of boiler failure.

When having a new boiler installed, power flushing’s recommended beforehand so you can get the full benefit from your new Boiler and existing central heating system.

How Power Flushing Works & What’s Involved

Power Flushing should always be undertaken by a gas safe registered engineer with the correct equipment and the real-world experience in using the procedure (TM Hughes & Son gas engineers tick all the boxes).

We use Kamco machines and chemicals, the Power Flushing industry standard designed to clear central heating systems properly.

Before we begin, we’ll turn on your radiators and measure the heat output. At the end of the procedure, you’ll see the improvement.

The machine’s connected to your system. If you have a combi boiler, the Kamco machine is attached if you have a system boiler, the machines connected at the pump.

A mixture of water and chemicals is pumped through your system over a few hours. The time taken depends on how bad your systems clogged, the age, and your system’s size.

The water/chemical mix circulates your system at a rate of 170 litres a minute, cleaning the Boiler, radiators and pipes as it goes. The pressure is high enough to dislodge sludge, rust and limescale. The forces also gentle enough, so no pipes or joints will burst/leak.

Once particles are dislodged, they’ll quickly break down and dissolve into small particles, which are filtered and removed by the machine.

Dirty water is collected (we’ll take it away and safely dispose of it).

The procedures repeated until your system is cleared.

Some systems may be severely blocked in places while flushing. We may have to dislodge large pieces of debris/limescale manually at the point of blockage (this is not disruptive or damaging to your system).

Once your systems thoroughly cleared, it’s refilled with fresh water and a corrosion inhibitor that will help prevent sludge build-ups in the future.

We’ll demonstrate the new superior heat output from your radiators when the systems switched on and tested.

What About Jet Flushing Or Hard Flushing?

Jet Flushing and Hard Flushing are alternative terms used for Power Flushing; they are not different procedures.

Benefits Of Powerflushing

  • Improved energy efficiency
  • Reduced fuel bills
  • Radiators’ heat output restored to full working order
  • Your system will heat up faster
  • The whole central heating system is clear
  • Quieter Boiler, pipes and radiators.
  • Sludge removal and de-scaling in one visit
  • Helps boiler warranties
  • Protection from boiler breakdowns

After Powerflushing, you’ll notice how fast your radiators heat and the improvement in heat output. Unclogged radiators will heat over the entire surface, warming each room faster and using less gas, leading to better energy efficiency.

Boilers and pumps have to work hard to circulate water through a backed-up system. This wears them out quicker and consumes more energy.

A flushed system has no obstacles that reduce flow water circulates quickly and easily using the correct amount of fuel to Power the process; your system will be less noisy also.

New boilers come with warranties. Some are only valid if the systems been Power Flushed before the installation. A warranty’s unlikely to cover a new boiler damaged by old corrosive water. A Flush should validate your warranty, ensuring a clean system is good practice before having a new boiler installed. You’ll enjoy the full benefits and have a valid boiler warranty.

A clean, central heating system is good for all Boilers regardless of age. A Power Flush minimises the chance of Boiler failure, which usually happen in winter when boilers are working their hardest.

Is A Power Flush Necessary?

An inspection of your central heating system will help determine if you need a Power Flush. You can inspect your system yourself. If you need any further help, one of our Power Flush engineers can come over and analyse your system.

Radiators Only Hot At The Middle & Top

Dense sludge particles settle in the bottom of the radiators. As the sludge worsens, it expands upwards inside your radiator. The build-up only allows your radiator to heat at the bottom.

Left alone, the build-up will increase to the middle. Now your radiator will only heat at the top. A cold room, extra work for your Boiler and pump and wasted gas result from a built-up radiator, so it should be Power Flushed.

“Some of my radiators are hot all over while others are cold at the bottom?”

Sludge build-ups are not always uniform across the whole central heating system. It’s common to find some radiators working correctly while others are cold in places.

Some Radiators Don’t Heat-Up

You may have a severe sludge build-up. Bleed your radiators, check the valves are working ok, and your Boiler and pump are functioning correctly.

If any radiators still don’t heat, they may be extremely backed up with sludge. Extremely dirty systems can cause damage and often cause other annoying issues (such as continuous boiler switch off due to reduced pressure)—definitely time for a Power Flush.

Boiler Keeps Switching Off

Repeated Boiler switch-off could be due to sludge, or it could be down to several other issues. First, all the system and Boiler components are checked (pilot light, gas flow, pump, etc.). If everything in order, a quick check of radiator water will indicate if it’s down to a dirty system.

Black Or Brown Water

Thoroughly cleaned systems have clean water, bleed your radiator and take note of the colour. If the waters grey or transparent, then your systems ok. Rusty brown water is caused by internal rust in the system. Black or dark brown waters caused by sludge. Black, dark brown or rust-brown water is confirmation it’s time for a Power Flush.

Radiators Have Pinhole Leak

Radiators can spring small pinhole leaks when corroded from the inside out by dirty water full of sludge and debris, an enemy of steel. Corrosion’s gradually caused over some time in infected systems. Leaky radiators need replacing, and your system needs flushing to avoid any further corrosion.

Noisy Pipes, Radiators, Boiler Or Pump

Any parts of the central heating system that are unusually noisy indicate a problem that needs looking at. If noises are caused by a sludged up system, then a Power Flush is recommended before any damage occurs.

Heating Is Slow

A functioning looked after the central heating system will heat radiators quickly. If your radiators are slow to heat up, then your system could probably do with a good Power Flush.
