An overflow and waste system is an essential feature of any sink, basin or bath. The waste system allows excess water to escape into the sewer system and includes a bottle trap that fills with water and stops any odour and gasses from the sewer entering your home.
Wastes are available in two types slotted and unslotted. Slotted wastes are for sinks and basins that have an overflow, while unslotted wastes are for sinks and basins that have no overflow.
The overflow will prevent flooding if the plug is in and the taps have been left running. The overflow also serves a second function by allowing air to enter the drain when the plug is removed.
There are several types of wastes with different plug options
Traditional Plug & Chain
A plastic or metal plug is fitted to a chain and put into the waste to stop water from escaping; these are found on older sinks and basins. Some modern versions don’t have an option for a chain.
Captive
The plug is fitted directly into the waste; water is released by flipping the stopper or pulling it up.
Sprung
Sprung wastes or pop up wastes open and shut by pressing down on the plug.
Strainer
Strainer wastes are used on kitchen sinks and have a cage design to catch loose bits of food, blocking the pipes further down the waste system.
